HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The idea to move Gate 9 at Redstone Arsenal has been in the works for a while now and the time has come for that project to get started to alleviate any traffic hazards.

"We've finally gotten the money to build the new Gate 9 which is gonna be about a quarter mile further south from the Gate 9 that currently exists,” said Redstone Arsenal Garrison Commander Tom Holliday.

They are moving the gate for two major reasons: one being to avoid the area of Redstone Gateway construction and another for traffic safety.

"It brings us a little further south from 565, so that if we have any backups, we don't end up backing up into a high-speed avenue, and that makes the community safer,” said Holliday.

The gate move will start on August first and is anticipated to be complete next summer. And this isn't the only project the Arsenal is planning.

"Further into the future as we continue the construction here and finish up building the new gate, we will end up redoing the fence line, which is the next phase of construction,” he said, “and then the final phase is to demolish the old gate structure."

So motorists need to be prepared for those lane changes for the next year.

"We'll have three bypass lanes all of which will be going to the right of the current Rideout Road,” said Holliday. “So as you come through the gate, if you're going south, you need to be prepared to move over to the right and continue to the lanes of travel."

The plan is to eventually move Goss Road as well and meet it back up with Rideout. If you're coming from Goss Road, you will no longer be able to take a left-hand turn onto Rideout, so you’ll want to go down Patton.
