Alabama nominates, casts first votes at GOP Convention

(WAFF) -

Donald Trump had great support from Alabama, earning thirty-seven of the state's fifty delegates in March's GOP primary, and state Republican leaders say he's the man who's going to be the next president, come November.

"I think we can be very proud of the support we gave our nominee,” said Jay Town, Finance Director of the Madison County GOP.

It began with Alabama, as Senator Jeff Sessions announced Trump as a candidate and led off the voting, announcing that 36 of Alabama’s delegates voted for Trump. Sessions also mentioned that the Donald Trump rally held in Madison was one of the biggest and most successful Trump rallies held this year.

State Republican leaders knew it was coming.

"It hasn't been a surprise for several months now," said Town. "To say you don't align with Trump is to say you don't align with folks that surround him and are giving him ideas and are filling his briefcase at night and emptying it in the morning."

But democrats think Trump has voters fooled. Thomas Ryan, Chairman of the Madison County Democratic Party, believes Republicans have heard Trump, but not listened.

"The public buying into his false populist ideas, that a billionaire's policies are really going to help the middle class and poor people. It's ridiculous,” said Ryan.

It seems each party's confidence in their candidate was bolstered by Trump securing the nomination Tuesday night. Now the attention shifts to November.
