BIRMINGHAM , AL (WAFF) -

Why not us? That's the motto for the 2016-17 edition of Alabama A&M football.

“Why not us? Why come every other team in our conference can compete and not us,” Bulldogs Head Coach James Spady answered Friday during SWAC Media Days.  “So let's compete and turn the corner, and make sure we're at the top of this thing, and that's the mindset.”

The offensive line was a major weakness a season ago. A number of newcomers hope to shore up a unit in need of continuity and consistency.

“We've got an offensive line coach now that will do a good job of bringing out the energy and aggressiveness that you have to have with that unit,” Spady added. “And as that unit goes so does our offensive team.”

For starter at Quarterback DeAngelo “Tootie” Ballard, his final game of last season produced a SWAC player of the week honor. Ballard believes he can carry that into a great 2016 season.

“The last game of the season I had a pretty good game. I was named SWAC Newcomer of the week, Ballard said Thursday.

“I use that as motivation, saying that I left off last season, and I'm gonna come into next season with the same attitude,” he said.

Players are excited about camp getting underway the first week of August. The Bulldogs get to travel to Jordan-Hare Stadium and face Auburn to end the season. First things first will be a trip to Murfreesboro, Tennessee on September 3 against Middle Tennessee.
