A devastating night that still continues to unfold this morning. Sadly, we have horrible news to deliver to you this morning on WAFF 48 News Today.

We are on top of breaking news coming out of Dallas, Texas with an ambush attack on police officers during a peaceful protest. Right now, we know 5 police officers are dead and 6 others are injured after a sniper style shooting on police officers who were protecting people during that protest. 

Three suspects are in custody, another is in an intense standoff with swat as of 3:45 a.m. We will take you live to Dallas as the world continues to watch this deadly situation unfold.

Also, one of Alabama's most prominent politicians will learn how much prison time he'll serve today. Former House Speaker Mike Hubbard will be sentenced after being convicted on felony ethics violations.

We're hitting dangerous levels of heat today across the Tennessee Valley. Our heat index will be well into the 100s so we will have your First Alert warning and breakdown your forecast.

    During the severe weather event on Saturday, radar indicated there was possible (but unconfirmed)  tornadic activity in Cullman County.  On Sunday the National Weather Service and Cullman County EMA survey team found evidence of an EF-1 tornado near Jones Chapel and straight-line wind damage near Battleground.  It was determined that a 200-yard swath of damage adjacent to widespread straight-line wind damage was attributed to an EF-1 tornado.
