MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Another year for the Spirit of America golf tournament brings out some solid competition from the collegiate and amateur ranks.

No born golfer from Morgan County has ever won the event. It's a testament to how difficult it is to put together four solid rounds of golf.

“You never know what's going to show up," New Market  native Chris Acthley said during Wednesday’s practice round. “Maybe the pressure gets to some people. Maybe they feel too comfortable being at home, and they take it for granted that they are going to come out and sometimes it just doesn't happen like that.”

Madison native Alex Mahlik was the first club member to win the event in 2013. Mahlik and others have their theories on the winless streak.

"If you're a local person maybe you get too comfortable with it maybe,” Mahlik said.  “And it's tough to win. We have a couple of members that are good golfers, but they get to the Spirit. It's really hard to win on your home course it really is.”
