HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville police are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Jordan Lane that left one man dead.

Just before 9:30 a.m. Alabama State Troopers responded to a call of a possible drunk driver who had hit several mailboxes on Highway 53 in Madison County.

Shortly after, troopers found the vehicle that had been described parked at Central Square Shopping Center off of Jordan Lane.

The driver was not inside the vehicle when troopers located it. Huntsville Police Department was assisting troopers in the search for the driver when someone informed them the driver had returned to the car.

A spokesperson for Huntsville police said the trooper approached the passenger side of the vehicle when the man pulled a gun from his glove compartment out on him.

“At that point, the struggle ensued between the trooper and the man. One of our officers came up, tried to assist," said Lt. Stacy Bates. "At that point, the man was refusing to drop the handgun and one of our police officers did fire shots, which struck the man. And subsequently, he died from his injuries."

A brief struggle ensued and a Huntsville police officer went to assist the trooper. Police said the man refused to drop the weapon and continued to struggle with the trooper and officer.

That is when officials said the officer shot the man.

"I had no good feelings at all. I felt like something bad had happened. We ran right out to the streets to where the shots were coming from and saw two police cars outside and we stood there for 10 minutes. It was terrible," said Claudia Wilks, who works at Cliff's Barber Shop in the shopping center.

Wilks described what happened next.

"A lot more police cars were pulling up at that moment. We just decided to walk back inside where we went to lockdown," said Wilks.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released his identity at this time.

"That's kind of shocking, you know, to see somebody lose their life." said Antonio Dardy who owns Level V Barber Shop nearby. "I've only been here for a few months but this is the first of its kind. It’s a tragic incident.”

Bates said the officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.

"There will be lots of follow-up investigation, lots of things involving him. Of course, questions he'll have to answer. Once that's done, everything will be presented to an instant review board," said Bates.
