FIRST ALERT WEATHER: Air Quality Alert today for Morgan and Madison Counties

(WAFF) -

More heat is on the way and to make matters worse the air quality is going to be unhealthy Friday due to a higher concentration of ground-level ozone.  An air quality alert has been issued for Friday for Madison and Morgan counties.

Children and those with asthma are at higher risk and should limit outdoor activity this afternoon. You are also encouraged to limit the use of gas burning equipment like lawnmowers on today.

We’ll be into the low-to-mid 90s this afternoon despite a cool morning with a mix of 50s and 60s.The weekend should be a few degrees hotter with the mid-90s expected. It will also be a little muggier, but the heat index should stay in the upper 90s for the most part.

There’s only a chance for a stray shower or storm during the afternoon hours this weekend. Any storms will fade away within a few hours of sunset.

We’re looking at a higher chance for those afternoon storms as we head into next work week. We certainly do need that rain right now as drought conditions worsen. Many areas are running 4-8” deficits since January. Highs through the middle of next week should continue to run in the lower 90s with overnight lows around 70.
