MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Power Co. is seeking permission to raise fees on people with residential solar power systems even as it fights a complaint challenging the charges. reports the utility has filed a request with the Public Service Commission to hike the fee by more than 8 percent to $5.42 per kilowatt. Opponents say the charges are helping depress the solar power industry in Alabama. The Southern Environmental Law Center filed a complaint in April asking regulators to block the fees.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Plans to resume passenger train service on the northern Gulf Coast suffered a setback with Alabama and Mississippi refusing money for the project. Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi had to pledge almost $35 million total over three years by Thursday to be eligible for the same amount in federal funds that would enable Amtrak trains to run from New Orleans eastward to Mobile, Alabama. Alabama refused, and the Southern Rail Commission says Mississippi's governor never responded to the request.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The one-time workplace of Rosa Parks is now an open-air park in Montgomery. The city has recreated the facade of the old Montgomery Fair store where Parks worked when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in 1955. Parks' act inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a starting point for the modern civil rights era. The store where Parks worked is gone, but the site iis now a downtown park open to visitors.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Senators from Tennessee are opposing part of President Donald Trump's government reorganization plan that revisits possibly selling the transmission assets of the nation's largest public utility. Sen. Lamar Alexander called the Tennessee Valley Authority sell-off a "looney idea" Thursday.
