MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

Court documents filed Wednesday in Montgomery acknowledge the criminal investigation into Governor Robert Bentley and former Senior Political Advisor Rebekah Caldwell Mason.

Attorneys for Mason referred to the investigation in a motion to dismiss the civil lawsuit filed by former ALEA Secretary Spencer Collier.

The filing requests a stay in the case in the event the judge denies the motion to dismiss.

Mason’s attorneys state she “is, or may be, the subject of ongoing criminal investigations relating to, among other things, her prior employment as a Senior Political Advisor to Defendant Governor Robert Bentley”.

The filing also states allegations and issues connected with the lawsuit are believed to overlap the criminal investigation.

Attorneys for Mason say her testimony or document provided could be used against her during the criminal investigation. Mason also asserted her fifth amendment right.

In the court documents, attorney Robert D. Segall states the following:

I represent Rebekah Mason in potential criminal legal matters regarding her employment as a Senior Political Advisor to Governor Robert Bentley and other related matters.  Upon review of the Complaint in this action, it is clear to me that the subject of this litigation includes matters that are believed to be under criminal investigation by the Department of Justice, Alabama Ethics Commission, and/or the Alabama Attorney General’s Office.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
