FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

The National Champion UNA softball team made it back safely to a great welcome by the Lion faithful Sunday at the UNA Softball Complex in Florence.
Fans wanted to greet a team that made softball an event in the Shoals. The Lions had a season to remember.

The team had 60 wins, a 30-3 conference record, which was a 90 percent winning rate in league play. The Lions only lost one conference road game this season to rival UAH. They won every league series this season. And of course the hardware, regular and post season Gulf South Conference champions, regional, Super Regional winners, and a 2016 National Championship.

And without their great team chemistry, Saturday National Title may not have happened.

“In January we started with a goal, the road to Denver,” Hatton native and pitcher Hillary Carpenter said Sunday. “I think we just took it one season at a time. It's just great winning with all these teammates, and the seniors, it's all worth it.” Carpenter was named the Women’s College World Series Most Outstanding Player.

“Our team chemistry is what got us this far,” UNA Head Coach Ashley Cozart added. “You gotta love each other, and enjoy being around each other to play well. And that's what they do, they just continue to fight and be together as a team.”
