TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office and Tuscumbia fire and police departments need help in solving an apparent arson case that happened May 13.

Investigators said the fire happened at the Bainesmere Apartments on East 6th Street in Tuscumbia. Although all four apartments in the building were leased, only two were occupied at the time of the fire and those 10 occupants were alerted and able to escape the building without injury.

A joint investigation by the state fire marshal’s office and local investigators determined the fire to have been intentionally started and the result of arson.

Investigators said on the night of the fire, a young male alerted the residents of the apartment building of the fire and they were able to escape without injury.

“When our officer arrived he noticed smoke coming from a bedroom window. When the fire department arrived they went in, put the fire out and it just didn't appear to be a natural cause,” said Tuscumbia Police Investigator Stuart Setliff. “A young black male, once the fire was started, started knocking on doors trying to warn people of the fire, and after we arrived or before we arrived he had left and we would like to be able to talk to this person to find out if he saw anything.”

If you have an idea of who this person may be or if you have any information which might be of assistance in determining who set this fire, you are asked to contact the Alabama Arson Hotline; 1-800-654-0775 or the website
