ATLANTA (WLOX) -

There is more fallout from the signing of House Bill 1523, Mississippi's Religious Accommodations Act.

Just one week after the cancellation of the New York-Mississippi Society's annual picnic in Central Park, the Mississippi Society of Georgia is calling off its upcoming celebration, scheduled to take place in June.

The group said due to the ongoing controversy over the new law, the 2016 Mississippi Weekend in Atlanta has been suspended. They hope to resume the event next year.

The Mississippi Society of Georgia released the following statement:

In light of the surrounding controversy and circumstances with passage of the recent Mississippi legislation, the Mississippi Society of Georgia announces with great regret the suspension of the 2016 Mississippi Weekend in Atlanta.

All June 24-25, 2016 scheduled events, including the Scholarship Golf Tournament, the Annual Mississippi Night at the Braves game, and the 8 th Annual Mississippi in the Park Celebration at Chastain Park, have been suspended.

The Mississippi Society of Georgia has been a diverse and inclusive organization since its inception in 2010. We do not discriminate, and we welcome all within the organization and to all of our events. The Society was founded to promote the cultural, academic, business, and economic development opportunities between Georgia and Mississippi. Through the proceeds from our annual Mississippi in the Park weekend and accompanying golf tournament, the Mississippi Society of Georgia has raised over $25,000 in scholarship funds that have been sent back directly to the colleges and universities in Mississippi.

Although we are suspending all functions for this year, we will continue to award our scholarship to one worthy Georgia freshman resident who will be attending a college or university in Mississippi for the 2016-17 academic year. The application process will continue as scheduled through April 30, 2016.
