Raven Cole pitched a two-hit shutout and the No. 4 University of North Alabama softball team defeated No. 11 UAH 4-0 on Sunday to win the three-game Gulf South Conference series.
With the win, the Lions improve to 37-5 overall and maintain first place in the Gulf South Conference with a 21-3 league record.
Cole, a junior from Orange, Texas, went the distance in the circle, working seven innings to improve to 19-1 on the season. She struck out seven and walked four, taking a one-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning. UAH (31-9 overall, 17-7 GSC) got a walk and a single in the final frame before Cole struck out the side to secure the win.
UNA plated single runs in the top of the first, second, fifth and sixth innings.
The Lions took an early lead with a score in the top of the first inning for the third straight game in the series when an RBI-single by Brooklynn Clark scored Bailey Nelson from second base.
Mackenzie Roberts hit the first pitch she saw in the second inning for a solo home run to put UNA ahead 2-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, Nelson scored on a sacrifice fly by Harlie Barkley to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
Madeline Lee wrapped up the scoring with a solo homer to left-center to lead off the top of the sixth.
It was the third home run of the series for the senior from Alabaster.
At the plate, Clark finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Her .493 batting average .529 on-base percentage and 70 hits on the year all lead the GSC.
Lee also went 2-for-3 on the day while Nelson was 2-for-4.
