MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

The Alabama Senate has passed a bill disallowing abortion clinics within a certain distance from public schools.

The bill, introduced by Senator Paul Sanford, would enforce a 2,000-foot perimeter from a public school, within which any clinic that performs abortions would not be allowed to operate.

Sanford said he compared his bill to legislation banning bars from being a similar distance away from schools and churches, and he said he doesn't think the bill is too much of a burden on the clinics.

The bill passed with a vote of 27-6 and now goes to the House.

If made into law, this would affect the Alabama Women's Center on Sparkman Drive, the only such clinic currently operating in Huntsville.
