FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) - Blake Hawkins rushed for one touchdown and passed for another in the first half and Tyler Grigsby threw for two second half scores to lead the White to a 28-7 win over Purple in the 2016 University of North Alabama Purple-White Spring Football Game.
"We had good competition and the crowed was great, so UNA was the big winner today," said UNA head coach Bobby Wallace, who watched his Lions play in front of a crowd of over 3,100 at Braly Stadium. "It was a lot of fun for our guys to play in front of such a good crowd, which I think was a record for our spring game."
"On the field it was spotty to say the least. We only had 11 offensive linemen dressed out, so that made it difficult for the offenses. But overall I was pleased with the whole day and with the entire spring," he said.
Hawkins, a red-shirt freshman from Florence, registered the first score of the game on a one-yard dive with 7:14 left in the second quarter, then hit Dajzon Dukes with a 24-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds left in the half to make it 14-0 at intermission.
Grigsby, a fifth-year senior from Florence who has spent much of his career as a punter or tight end for the Lions, saw his first action at quarterback and completed four of eight passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
Grigsby threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Luke Jennings with 5:31 left in the game to push the White lead to 21-7 after Rhett Morrison added the extra-point.
The Purple then rallied behind a 28-yard run by quarterback Matthew Markham and got its first score on a two-yard run by Jacob Thomas.
Clay Sudduth's PAT made it 21-7 with 2:16 left in the game.
The game's final score came on a 38-yard pass from Grigsby to Jaylan Jackson. Morrison's PAT made the final count 28-7.
