FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

There are two top 10 softball teams in North Alabama--one of which resides in Florence, Alabama.

The UNA Lions ranked number six in this week’s poll with a 29-4 record.

"It's definitely exciting, anytime you're ranked that high and winning games, it's fun,” said UNA Lions infielder Harley Barkley Wednesday.

The Lions roster has nine North Alabama natives, which gives Lions' players some familiarity and tons of fan support in the Shoals.

"We have a community behind us, and I know that if they aren't in the stands or not they are behind me and this team,” said outfielder Bailee Nelson.

Nelson, who played high school softball at Central in Florence, said, “I've played travel ball with five of the girls on this team, and I think that says alot."

The other top 10 team resides in Huntsville. The UAH Chargers ranked third this week with a 25-4 record.

Both teams will meet April 2 and 3.

Lions Head Coach Ashley Cozart believes her program can now compete with the elite in the Gulf South Conference.

"The girls know, but Les does an incredible job, and like I was telling you earlier, It's nice to have the rival back," Cozart said. "We're just gonna bring it, but our girls know what to expect now and what they have to do to be successful."

"They've seen that from those teams, and they've set great examples, and I think that we're in the mix," said the coach.

UNA travels to face West Alabama for a weekend series, starting Saturday.
