SeeClickFix: Traffic signal plans for busy road

(WAFF) -

A huge traffic problem has become increasingly dangerous for people who live along a busy Huntsville road.

Traffic engineers have figured out a way to handle the high volume traffic zone.

A growing area of Huntsville is in high demand of a traffic light.

"In the best interest of safety... kind of de-clutter it or decongest the intersection there," said Patrick O'Farrell.

That's what Patrick O'Farrell wants for his neighbors in the Lake Forest subdivision off of Martin Road.

"It's clear there's a congestion issue. It's about a two mile backup in terms of everybody getting onto Gate 7 at Redstone Arsenal, so it backs up pretty strong in the morning," O'Farrell said.

In fact, a lot of people expressed how bad the section of road is for their safety, and some have even signed a petition.

Huntsville traffic engineering recognizes the concern.

"Well, in a nutshell it's cars per hour is what the federal requirements are looking for. You have to have the major warrants we looked at the minimum of eight hours during the day where a minimum number of cars per hour on the minor street which is Lake
Forest and the major street which is Martin Road," said Dan Sanders.

They plan to add a traffic signal in the next 60 days ahead of initial plans part of a road widening project.

"If we give them a traffic signal, we would be able to at least stop east bound traffic enough for them to make their left or right out of there," Sanders said.

O'Farrell agrees the traffic signal would be a huge help to keep things moving... at least until the road widening project gets underway.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
