DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

East Lawrence High School honors first ever state champion scholars' bowl team.

East Lawrence High School says it has the smartest students, and now it has the trophy to back it up.

The East Lawrence Scholars Bowl Team won the high school’s first and only state title on Saturday in Birmingham.

Lawrence County Superintendent Johnny Yates said people go to the University of Alabama to see what Saban and his team are doing and people will now come to East Lawrence High School to see what this team is doing.

The team beat seven other top eight schools to take home the first place trophy. Classmates, parents and school faculty all gathered on Wednesday morning to honor them for their great accomplishment.

The team and their coach agreed the victory took a lot of dedication but they had the skills and drive to do it.

“I’m filled with pride for my team, for my school, the accomplishments that all of us have put in,” said team captain Chris Terry. “The work that my teammates have put in is amazing.”

East Lawrence will compete in the regional Scholars Bowl Tournament this weekend at West Point High School.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
