HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Thousands of supporters gathered outside the Space & Rocket Center Saturday evening as they awaited presidential candidate Marco Rubio.

Due to the large crowds expected, the event was moved outside. The Space and Rocket Center closed early Saturday afternoon for the event.

Rubio arrived shortly after his visit to Birmingham, in which he stressed the importance of limited government, a strong national defense, and free enterprise.

Some we spoke with ahead of the rally said they came just to hear what Rubio has to say. Others describe themselves as true supporters, and are for many of the conservative stances he has taken.

“Marco Rubio will be the best president we’ve ever had,” claimed a boy at the rally.

A few fans of Rubio came prepared with signs - one of which boldly advised, "Dump Trump," a message Rubio was eager to push.

“I’m really excited. I’m cancelling the other rally I was planning to go to tomorrow. I was just impressed with his platform,” said Rubio supporter Jeanne Kruza.

After coming off a fiery Republican debate on Thursday night, an energized and passionate Rubio took the stage.

“I’m honored to be with you today, and this setting is fantastic. It’s a reminder of what great countries do. When I’m President of the United States, America will be sending men and women into space again," said Rubio.

He spoke on many topics, including our U.S. military, helping the poor without punishing the rich, and our veterans.

“We’re going to take care of our veterans. If you’re a veteran, raise your hand so we can thank you. God bless you,” said Rubio.

Rubio also had a few words about his rival Republican Candidate Donald Trump.

"Here's the guy with the worst spray tan in America criticizing me for wearing makeup," Rubio said, referencing Trump and to a response of cheers and applause.

Rubio took aim at his rival, again, adding, “On issue after issue, he is not who he says he stands for. He is preying on people who today are vulnerable, people who are hurting, people who are struggling pay check to pay check.”

He also went on the offensive against Democratic contenders Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.

Rubio told the assembled group that if elected, he would be a president who would uphold the constitution and who on his first day in office, would "repeal each and every one of President Obama's unconstitutional executive orders."

Additionally, he made a bold statement during the rally, saying, he’s the only candidate who can beat Hillary Clinton.

“They attack me more than any republican in this race because they know that if you nominate me, we will win.”

In the shadow of the big Trump rally Sunday and Super Tuesday next week, Marco Rubio’s new stance is going to have to take root quickly in order for it to make a difference.
