Jury finds Madison Co. man guilty of capital murder for 2011 death of elderly woman

A jury found a Madison County man guilty on Thursday morning for the 2011 murder of an elderly woman.

John Clayton Owens, Jr. is charged with capital murder for killing 91-year-old Doris Richardson in 2011.

Authorities said she was found dead in her home on Bide-A-Wee-Drive. They said someone had burglarized her home as well.

In court, prosecutors said Owens manually strangled Richardson and then stole coins, jewelry, and guns from her home.

The sentencing hearing started Thursday.

The state is asking for the death penalty.

Thursday afternoon Richardson's daughter took the stand. She talked about how active her mother was before the murder.

The defense called several witness to the stand today including Owens' stepmother, brother and probation officer. They are asking for a life sentence.

Court has been dismissed until 8:15 Friday morning.
