HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Your neighborhood retailers are not exempt from the litter patrol - and they could face fines for being "trashy" neighbors.

Big-box retailers in the Huntsville area have been put on notice because of plastic bags and other litter coming from their businesses.

Operation Green Team says they have tools to help them clean up their act.

"These are litter sticks," said Green Team Director Joy McKee, demonstrating a handy device to help pitch in with the litter removal effort. "Operation Green Team has been giving these away to folks, volunteers, for the past 17 years."

McKee said retail litter, whether intentional or not, has her team picking up more litter than they say is necessary.

"It's not necessarily Walmart's fault. They are doing everything they can, but sometimes the bags fly out to the neighborhood or fly out to the road," said McKee.

Case in point: Countless store bags could be seen blown across L&N Drive and onto nearby property.

SeeClickFix users also blame litter across Hobbs Road to the nearby Walmart, saying, "Walmart needs to be more actively involved in cleaning up the litter created by the Walmart on South [Memorial] Parkway."

McKee agrees - and that particular SeeClickFix complaint has been closed since the Green Team stepped in.

"We went out, and it was quite a bit of litter," said McKee. "It was 30 bags... it had accumulated."

McKee encourages all retailers to be good neighbors - and monitor their litter on a daily basis.
