FIRST ALERT: AL kidnapping suspect killed, the other wounded, in police shootout

(WAFF) -

AL crime spree suspect killed

The Missouri couple suspected in a multi-state crime spree, spanning from Tuscaloosa to Perry, Georgia, is no longer on the run. Law enforcement caught up with Blake Fitzgerald and Brittany Harper near Pensacola, Florida Thursday night. Multiple shots were exchanged between officers and the couple, killing Fitzgerald and seriously wounding Harper. Fitzgerald and Harper are wanted on robbery and kidnapping charges in Alabama in a crime spree that began in Tuscaloosa on Sunday morning when authorities say they kidnapped a night clerk at the Microtel Inn and Suites. They also face charges in the kidnapping and robbery of a Vestavia Hills woman and the robbery of a McDonald’s in Hoover across from the Riverchase Galleria. They are also suspected in an armed robbery and kidnapping in Perry, GA on Monday, Feb. 1.

Crews battle early morning blaze

Crews worked to extinguish a fire at a south Huntsville home early Friday morning. Five units responded to the home on Heatherhill Drive, where a fire began in the basement but was quickly contained. Three people were displaced in this fire. The home suffered heavy smoke and fire damage. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Chilly start to Friday

It’s cooler Friday morning compared to Thursday, with many in the mid-to-upper 20s. Frost should be fairly widespread, so you may have some scraping to do if you parked outside. We’ll see sunny skies to start the morning with a few more clouds rolling in by the afternoon.
