Dead Horses

There may be a serial sniper on the loose in Madison County. His or her target: livestock. The shootings are taking place in and around Manley Road. That's in north Madison County near the Tennessee state line.

One horse has already turned up dead, a very expensive quarter horse in the New Market/Hazel Green area. Others are taking measures to prevent similar crimes.

The dead horse named Lucy was buried this week. The 20-year-old quarter horse was one of Tim Britton's favorites. His wife discovered Lucy's body this past weekend. She had been shot, apparently with a rifle. The Brittons live near woods but deer hunting season is over. They don't believe Lucy's death was caused by a confused hunter.

"Takes a low person to do it. It ain't no man that done it cause he'd come forward to me; you know what I'm saying," Britton said.

Britton says other livestock have been intentionally killed in this same area. Others who live in this area are now taking measures to secure their horses. Police don't believe there's a string just yet. But they're certainly looking for suspects.

    An incarcerated Lawrence County man who walked off a work detail earlier this month has been captured in Colorado.  The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office reportedly took Austen Larry Williams, 28, into custody on Saturday.
