DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Christmas is a joyful time for many, especially families with a newborn baby at home.

However, not every infant survives birth, and some North Alabama students are reaching out to families facing that heartbreak at an understandably difficult time of the year.

?Sixth graders from Speake School visited the Parkway Campus of Decatur Morgan Hospital to see how some gifts they made will be used.

The idea of giving back came during the summer, according to guidance counselor Tracy Parker.

"During the summer my principal Tina Blankenship and I were discussing things we could do with the kids to give back to the community," said Parker. "So through some research, we looked for some activities that could be hands-on and the kids could do themselves and give back to the community, and so we came up with the Boggins from Bobcats campaign."

She says this campaign is one that touched the hearts of students who wanted to help. The boggins are made for newborns who don't survive their journey.

The baby is placed in the boggin and presented to the mother.

Alondra Nevarez says she loves the project.

"I know it's a tough thing," she said. "It makes me really happy to make somebody's day."

McClain Reed has a sense of how much this project is needed.

"I feel really happy to do this because... sometimes when they're first born, they get really sick. And, you know, sometimes they can possibly die, and that just makes me sad 'cause this could be their first and last Christmas, and I just want them to think that somebody really cares for them," he said.

Caring enough to make a present for the baby and the family... giving back in Bobby's Bama.
