FIRST ALERT: Dense fog advisory in effect until 9 a.m.

(WAFF) - Dense fog advisory in effect

A dense fog advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. in the Tennessee Valley. Visibility will be reduced to less than a quarter-mile and you'll want to budget extra time for a slower drive than normal. Once the fog lifts, you'll see partly-to-mostly cloudy skies through the day.

I-20/59 SB lanes reopened

The southbound lanes of I-20/59 have been reopened after a chemical spill and fire near the Arkadelphia Road exit in Birmingham. Crews responded to a hazmat situation on I-20/59 at Arkadelphia Road/Exit 123 around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Birmingham police say an 18-wheeler spilled several chemicals and Hazmat crews were notified. Shortly before 9 p.m., the truck caught fire. Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis says they believe the truck was carrying toluene, a gas additive, which may be responsible for the combustion after it mixed with hydrogen peroxide also on the truck.

Sheriff's deputy shot in South Carolina

A sheriff's deputy in Greenville, South Carolina, was rushed to a hospital after being shot in the head by an armed suspect. The deputy was rushed to a Greenville hospital where he is undergoing surgery. Other responding deputies on the scene shot and killed the suspected gunman.
