(WAFF) - NBC's late-night mainstay "Saturday Night Live" acknowledged the attacks in Paris with a simple, yet touching opening statement.
Cast member Cecily Strong opened the program Saturday with the following, which she delivered with a slight quake in her voice:
"Paris is the city of light, and here in New York City, we know that light will never go out. Our love and support is with everyone there tonight. We stand with you."
After a short beat, Strong repeated her statement in French, before formally opening the show.
SNL has strayed from the usual comedic openings twice in recent memory.
The show opened with a children's chorus singing a Christmas carol shortly after the Newtown school shooting. On their first show back after the 9/11 attacks, SNL opened with statements from then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and a performance by singer Paul Simon, all before a group of New York City firefighters.
