HAZEL GREEN, AL (WAFF) -

A major thoroughfare for folks in north Madison County is now open for the first time in six months.

Today crews finished up the final repairs on the Carriger Road bridge in Hazel Green. The road was shut down in May after the county discovered the bridge was “too dangerous for drivers.”

“It has been a very big inconvenience. I mean we have had to go an extra four to six miles to get to the highway, but it was something that couldn’t be helped,” said David Stephens.

Many people who live in this area say this day couldn’t come soon enough.

“It seems like it’s been forever since the bridge was open. Cause I just work right up the street, so it was like a mile and a half and now it’s about seven, eight miles to go around. It’s been a little crazy,” said Cheri Mitten.

The road work cost taxpayers $100,000 to fix the small section of the bridge and $2.5 million to replace the entire bridge.
