MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

Unsure on what to do when you’re behind the wheel of a car is never a good sign.

“If you don’t know that it’s safe to proceed wait and a see,” said Seth Burkett.

The intersection is Hughes Road and Highway 72. Drivers on Hughes turning right say it’s hard to tell if motorists turning left from 72 onto Hughes Road will actually make the left, or if they’ll make a U-turn.

Alabama Transportation Department Public Information Specialist Seth Burkett says the intersection is properly signed.

“There’s actually a sign on Hughes Road as you’re northbound next to the right turn lane that states, 'Right on red must yield to drivers making U-turns,'” Burkett said.

Burkett says it boils down to following the basic rules of the road.

“It’s the responsibility of all drivers not to enter an intersection unless they can see that it is say to do so. If you don’t have a signal telling you that you’re good to go ahead, you need to look and make sure there's not a car that could possibly be coming your way,” said Burkett.

Burkett says most people are accustomed to thinking U-turns are illegal. In this case, the U-turn is the only way for you to get around the concrete median on Hwy. 72.

“The only time you’ll have drivers making a U-turn legally is when they have the green light, and they are protected on their left turn and their U-turn,” Burkett said.

As far as traffic accidents, Burkett says there's no indication that there's anything approaching a major problem, but failure to yield the right of way is a major cause of non-fatal wrecks statewide. Burkett says safe drivers make safe roads.
