FIRST ALERT: Parker, attorneys expected in federal court to prep for new trial; Relief efforts underway after floods devastate South Carolina

(WAFF) -

New trial preparations

Eric Parker, the Madison Police officer facing federal civil rights charges, is expected in federal court today to begin preparing for his new trial date. Parker's trial last month ended in a mistrial when the jury couldn't unanimously reach a verdict. He is facing charges stemming from an altercation with Sureshbhai Patel, who was visiting from India at the time. Patel was left partially paralyzed after the incident.

Relief efforts underway

South Carolina has been devastated by record-breaking rainfall and floods and relief efforts are currently underway. 1,300 National Guard troops have been activated in the Palmetto State, as volunteers from the Red Cross have been sent from Alabama. President Obama also issued a disaster declaration. At least 11 people have died in weather-related instances in South Carolina after widespread rains pummeled the state.
