FIRST ALERT: UNA prepping for campaign stop from GOP presidential candidate; New credit card chip technology goes into effect

(WAFF) -

GOP candidate making stop in Florence

Former Arkansas governor and current Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee will be addressing supporters at the University of North Alabama Thursday morning. Huckabee, who won Alabama's vote in the 2008 Republican primary, is the third GOP candidate to visit Alabama but the first to visit Florence. He'll be speaking at the University Performance Center on UNA's campus beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Card chip technology aimed at protecting cardholders

New measures go into effect nationwide to help keep you safe from credit card fraud following a series of high profile breaches. Credit cards will now feature embedded card chips to help keep your funds safe from hackers. The embedded card chips have become increasingly popular in the U.S. over the past year to help keep shoppers safe from data breaches by assigning each transaction an individual code adding an extra layer of security. If you haven't received your card yet, most banks say they will send them out in the next few months.

Hurricane Joaquin strengthening

After being officially labeled as a hurricane on Wednesday, Hurricane Joaquin quickly jumped from category 1 to category 3 as it continues to churn in the Atlantic. Hurricane Joaquin has prompted hurricane warnings for the Bahamas and has caused several areas on the East Coast to begin their hurricane preparations amid heavy rainfall and flash flooding that many are already dealing with.
