HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Rezoning school traffic on a busy highway is top priority for your child's safety.

The City of Huntsville Traffic Engineering Department is working out the details for Providence School zone along Old Monrovia Road Northwest.

25 miles-per-hour school speed limit signs are posted on both sides of Old Monrovia Road, but many of you who take short cuts say more signs are needed on adjacent side streets.

City of Huntsville Traffic Engineering Interim Director Dan Sanders says your complaint is valid.

“It is important for drivers to recognize they are in a school zone, and I do agree with the person who sent in the SeeClickFix that they aren’t aware they are in a school zone,” Sanders said.

Sanders says they’ve added signs to side streets within other school zones around town in similar situations. He goes on to say the case on Old Monrovia Road will be handled differently.

“We’re going to shorten the school zone, so those internal streets except for Hunting Trail will no longer be in the school zone,” said Sanders.

The changes will shift the school zone to the west by approximately 350 feet according to Huntsville Traffic Engineering Department. The new flashing signs would cover a shorter distance and eliminate streets such as Biltmore, Cranston, and Beck.

“The school district has changed the pattern of traffic circulation there to where all the traffic is coming in at the traffic signal at Hunting Trail,” said Sanders.

And those changes have done away with crossing guards on Old Monrovia Road. Sanders says they are working with Huntsville Police Department Public Safety supervisors on marking the upcoming changes.

Traffic engineers are still fine tuning all the details. We’re told the changes will likely occur during winter break.
