(WAFF) - Alabama's long-time state health officer is leaving the job after more than two decades.
Dr. Don Williamson is leaving to become the president of the Alabama Hospital Association.
Williamson said he is proud of the state's efforts to establish a statewide trauma system and to provide health insurance to children.
He said he would still like to see the state's infant mortality statistics and tobacco use rates go down.
Williamson takes over AHA in November.
