Custom Caring, sharing and pairing it all with community

HAZEL GREEN, AL (WAFF) -

Toney customer, James Jarrell is proud of his restored Bahama Blue 1965 Volkswagon.

"I had a bug like this back in 1971 when I got married." Jarrell says. He says there's a reason so many people love their bugs.

"It brings people back to when they were younger. I drove Volkswagons when I was in high school and in college and then didn't have one until recently. So I think that's what it does it brings people back to that time of their life." says Jarrell.

The CEO and founder of Airkooled Kustoms, Eric "Spook" LeClair has his own favorite, named for his girlfriend's great grandmother.

"The car is actually named "Miss Mable" in honor of Mabel Powers, a long time Athens resident and quite the character if you will." says LeClair, "We will be showing this car for the next show season on the VW circuit. We will be all over the southeast."

He says the important thing is able to show people what his shop can do.  He says many of these restored gems have a sentimental history.

"Eighty percent of the vehicles we are doing are heritage builds.  There's a personal connection with the car...they got married in the car like Mr. Jerrell and he took it on his honeymoon.  We have another cliet out there, as you see some of the cars it was a gift from a wife to a husband." says LeClair.

It is one thing to build a business and make it very successful, but it's quite another thing to want to share that success with the community.

This business holds charity events for the Shelby Humane Society's Shelter Partners Program.  It is a volunteer driven transport program giving second chances for thousands of dogs.  And you will find some of these folks foster and adopt their own furbabies.  Veterinarian, Connor Sindel, says they give back to the community.

"Airkooled Kustoms, they're just very active in the community, as a whole.  They care a lot about our pets, pet overpopulation, and providing for pets." says Sindel.
