Eleanor Costello scored a game-tying goal with just over three minutes to play in regulation but the University of North Alabama could not score in overtime and was forced to settle for a 2-2 tie with McKendree in the Lions 2015 soccer opener.
UNA led 1-0 at the half as Chloe Richards scored the only goal of the opening period at the 21:39 mark off an assist from Beatriz Fernandes. It was Richard’s 42nd career goal.
McKendree tied the match at the 65:53 mark off a set piece as Chelsea Whitaker scored on a header off a kick from Alyssa Reiniger.
The Bearcats then took their first lead of the match in the 87th minute as Alyssa Patterson scored off an assist from Sydnee Carroll.
North Alabama answered just 15 seconds later when Costello scored to tie the match at 2-2.
The two teams then played through two scoreless overtime periods.
McKendree out-shot UNA 21-17 in the match but the Lions finished with 11 shots on goal to eight for the Bearcats.
UNA goalkeeper Shelby Thornton recorded six saves.
The Lions open their home schedule on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Belmont Abbey.
