When disaster strikes, time is of the essence. Within minutes, you and your family need to be in your safe place.

Within minutes, your entire life can be turned upside down. Within minutes, you may have to evacuate and take only the essentials with you.

You won’t have time to search for supplies or shop for them.

That is why having a fully stocked emergency kit, already in your safe place, is crucial.

Some items that you’ll need include:

  • a first aid kit
  • any medications you may need
  • your NOAA weather radio
  • flashlight
  • extra batteries
  • cell phone charger(s)
  • copies of important family documents
  • shoes in case of debris
  • moist towelettes and garbage bags for personal sanitation
  • local maps to navigate a heavily damaged area
  • whistle to signal for help
  • multi-purpose tool to turn off utilities
  • sleeping bag, blankets, or bedding
  • extra cash
  • enough non-perishable food and water to last for at least 3 days (one gallon of water per person per day is recommended)
  • can opener for food

Some items that you’ll want to consider based on the specific needs of your family are:

  • infant formula and diapers
  • pet food and extra water for your pet
  • medical supplies (hearing aids, glasses, syringes, etc.)
  • games and activities for children

It is also advisable to have an additional emergency kit in your car, in the event that you are traveling and become stranded during severe or winter weather.
