WATCH WAFF: Madison police officer trial set to begin Tuesday; Limestone Co. man convicted of murder asks for new trial

(WAFF) -

Jury selection begins in Eric Parker trial

Tuesday, the federal trial for a Madison police officer accused of using excessive force on an elderly man is set to begin. Jury selection will begin at 9 a.m. in Eric Parker's trial. Parker faces a civil rights violation and is accused of using excessive forces during a confrontation with Sureshbhai Patel in February. The confrontation was caught on police dash cam video, showing Parker slamming Patel to the ground, partially paralyzing him. Prosecutors in this case only want the jury to see the first two minutes of that video. They're also expected to call several experts to the stand to testify.

Moyers defense team asking for new trial

A Limestone County man convicted of capital murder will continue his fight for a new trial. Lawyers for Joel Moyers say their client wants a new trial over allegations of misconduct by the jury that convicted him. Moyers was convicted in the 2012 murder of Brandon Hydrick, who was shot and killed on a rural road in the Limestone County community of Tanner. Last week, Moyers' defense team presented a sworn statement from a holdout juror alleging other jury members improperly deliberated outside court. Tuesday, a hearing will be held in which those jurors could be questioned.
