HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Heart of the Valley YMCA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday for its southeast Huntsville location.

Mayor Tommy Battle helped cut the ribbon to the newly-renovated facility.

Dozens of spectators gathered at the Southeast Family YMCA to celebrate the remodel.

YMCA board member Scott Seeley says the changes will help improve programs offered, including childcare and spin classes.

He also says improving child safety was a major concern.

"The Y is focused on youth development," said Seeley. "That's one of our primary areas of focus, and so we need to have good facilities that are safe for our children, and that was one of our objectives with this renovation."

Resurfacing the gymnasium facilities was another large part of the renovation process.

This location of the Heart of the Valley YMCA served nearly 15,000 families in 2014.
