SOMERVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Residents of Somerville believe that the library is the center of the community and an asset that brings the community together.

Michelle Walker is the director of the Somerville Public Library.  She points with pride at some of the programs they have which meets the needs of their community.

"We have a preschool reading story time on Thursday morning where we read to the preschoolers." says Walker.

The placement of books make searching easy. All the books at the library were made into a movie.

Walker says they have a section of books for sale as well as available for check out.

"We have an after school tutoring program. And this year we're doing something new and exciting.  We're offering private tutoring along with our group tutoring." says Walker.

There is also cultural displays which have become a source of pride.

Walker adds, "The Carnegie Visual Arts Center is a partner of ours and about once a quarter they will come in and bring a brand new display of artwork for everyone to enjoy."

According to Walker one of the really big draws to the library is the addition of computers.

"We have 9 desktops and 4 laptops that are used for our tutoring program and for the general public. The internet access out here is very limited.  So this gives people who don't have access the ability to come. They can search for jobs. They can do research, college classes, homework assignments and it really is a big asset to the community." says Walker.

Another item to check out at the library is the hometown heroes. These are people who have served their country and are from Somerville.

Walker says this is a type of gathering place for people to come, use the resources and meet friends in Bobby's Bama.
