You can spend days, weeks, even months preparing, but when disaster strikes, you may find yourself lacking things to keep you and your family safe.

What if the power has been out for several days and your generator gas is running low? What if you forgot to restock some medications in your emergency kit? What if you’re running low on food? No matter how much we prepare, the hypothetical scenarios are endless.

If you find yourself in that situation, and you don’t need 911 and emergency medical attention, just remember 2-1-1, an easy to remember, toll-free number that you dial for health and human services information.

After April 27, 211 received roughly 26,000 calls statewide.

Jessica Rasche, 211 Program Manager at Crisis Services North Alabama, says they had a lot of calls for ice and then for food, once it began to spoil because of power outages. Callers also requested information on generators and gasoline availability.

211 is also a valuable resource during winter storm months.

"Callers want to know what roads may be shut down, or what are some things they can do when they’re stranded in their vehicle along with lots of other vehicles and help may not be available immediately," said Rasche.

When you dial 211, you’ll speak with a call specialist who will assess your individual needs while searching their expansive database of nearby agencies and available resources to quickly get you the help you need.

Fall severe weather season is right around the corner, meaning now is the time to review your safety plan and restock your emergency kit.

Next week on Be Prepared, I’ll go over what supplies you should have in that kit.
