(WAFF) - Governor Robert Bentley has officially ordered the state National Guard to be armed.
In a series of tweets posted Monday, Bentley wrote:
"I have ordered the Alabama National Guard to be armed and protected. I met with Maj. Gen. Perry Smith and approved additional details today. My directive includes arming guardsmen involved in state active duty as well as the four National Guard recruiting locations. Specific details of this plan are classified and no further information will be provided.
Bentley and top National Guard officials agreed on a plan July 21. The plan comes in the wake of the fatal shooting of five military service members in Chattanooga.
The governor said the plan was needed because those in uniform are targets for attacks.
