LOOK AHEAD: Storms possible on Fourth of July; officials stepping up security measures for holiday weekend

(WAFF) -

With the Fourth of July weekend right around the corner, we're tracking the weather to alert you to any disruption of your weekend plans.

Additional storms should track into the area overnight into Saturday and linger into the morning hours of Independence Day.  Like this morning, storms could contain frequent lightning and some will be strong, but most won’t be strong enough to be severe.  Scattered afternoon storms should still develop on the Fourth, but as we head into the evening, that activity should be winding down. Temperatures will be cooler than you’d expect for July with highs into the mid-80s once again.

Meanwhile, some Valley authorities are stepping up their security measures after a federal security bulletin was released last Friday warning about the possibility of a threat over the holiday weekend. While there is no specific threat, officials say it's all about broader security.

And Alabama Department of Corrections officials are still searching for a work-release inmate who escaped from his job site overnight.

Make sure to remain weather aware this weekend. You can download our free 48 Storm Team app by texting APPS to 4-48-48 (standard texting rates apply). You can also search "WAFF" in your device's app store. With the app, we'll send you alerts when there's lightning in your area so you and your family stay safe.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
