Huntsville High School Head Baseball Coach David Sharp loves the game of baseball. When he's not coaching his Panthers, he spends the summer months coaching at clinics.
However, this summer, Coach Sharp will be taking his coaching talents overseas, wearing the Red, White and Blue as an assistant coach for Team USA's 12-and-under national team, as they make their way to Taiwan to face teams from Japan, Australia, Brazil and others.
It's an opportunity that came to be thanks to his Huntsville High squad, showing off its talent against the nation's best two seasons ago in Curry, North Carolina.
"Our kids had a great showing," Sharp said. "They conducted themselves in the right way; we competed and got after it and held our own. After the tournament, USA Baseball asked if I would be interested in getting involved - and who could say no to that?"
Sharp says the chance to coach wearing American colors is an honor. Just seeing the red, white and blue was more than enough.
"I will be honest, when I pulled those two jerseys out of the package they sent, there was that blue and that white USA jersey... I got chills," he said.
While the moment of coaching for Team USA will forever be a home run, Coach Sharp understands where he is coming from.
"I would not be in this position if it wasn't for the people that have played here in front of me," Sharp said, "people that have coached here, mainly Mr. [Mark] Mincher, the assistant coaches that we have here, the players that we have here... This is a Huntsville High School award."
