HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Former University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey head coach Danton Cole has been named an assistant coach for the U.S. World Junior Team, and will work alongside head coach Ron Wilson and fellow assistants Chris Chelios and Kevin Reiter.

Cole was the head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team this past season. Cole will be on the bench for Team USA as they compete in the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland this December.

A native of Pontiac, Michigan, Cole was at the helm of UAH hockey from 2007-10, before leaving the program for a position with the U.S. Hockey National Development Team.

In his final season with the Chargers, he led the team to the NCAA Tournament after winning the College Hockey America Tournament in the 2009-10 campaign.

After playing four seasons collegiately at Michigan State, Cole went on to play in the NHL for seven seasons including stints with the Winnipeg Jets, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders and the Chicago Blackhawks.

UAH hockey recently released the 2015-16 schedule that includes nine home series in the upcoming campaign, beginning at the Von Braun Center on Oct. 9-10 vs. UConn.
