ARDMORE, AL (WAFF) -

The Gator Gambler is open for business on Main Street in Ardmore. Weston Whitt and his wife are in charge. Whitt says it's all about the gators.

"Ever since I could walk and talk, I was all about alligators," he said. "I would study. I would go out... and every time we would go to Gulf Shores I would go to Alligator Alley."

It's a love he wanted to share with the folks back home. "I wanted to bring that up to Northern Alabama for the children up here to see, and actually be able to get up close and personal with them. Gators can see out of the side of their eyes. They can't see in front of them. There's so many things, little things, that you really need to know," Whitt said.

The enthusiasm he has for the creatures is clear, as he says he wants kids to understand the complexity, beauty and even the danger.

"Children want to be like the 'Gator Boys.' Children want to be like Troy Landry. The problem is that TV makes it look a lot easier than it really is," he said.

They may not be "Swamp People," but they know their stuff when it comes to reptiles.

There is so much more here than just alligators. There are all types of reptiles featured at the Gambler's, such as 18-year old Penelope, a type of African tortoise and she's going to live to be about 200 years old.

"They're going to see alligators. They're also going to see bearded dragons, Pac-man frogs, pretty much about anything that you don't see at a pet store, you can see here," Whitt said.

And yes, he feels like he knows them pretty well. "I've worked with tougher and stronger gators than him. I mean, he's a puppy dog to me."

Seriously, there is a love here for some creatures that is clearly evident in Whitt's demeanor.

"It's all reptiles and it's just an exhibit just for children and mainly for my benefit... I love them," he said.
