AT 10: Mental hold order leads to standoff

Good Tuesday evening.

We're on top of the breaking news story of a Madison County standoff we first brought you this evening at 5. Police and SWAT crews were called to a home on Crystal Creek Drive in New Market after they say a man threatened his family members with a blunt instrument. The man was due to be committed for a court-ordered mental hold. He was detained and no one was hurt. WAFF 48's Tiani Jones spoke with a neighbor to get their take on the drama.

A plan is in place to bolster Huntsville's Cummings Research Park. 10 companies from across the country have submitted plans to give the park a makeover. WAFF 48's Sarah Navoy will dig deeper into what the plan involves and how it will hopefully benefit the entire community.

And more on the horrific aftermath of a young man who allegedly beat his mother to death in the DeKalb County city of Mentone. A judge will soon set a preliminary hearing for Tyler Blansit, who's accused of beating his mother, Sherry Blansit, to death. The incident reportedly stemmed from an argument over the son's bad grades.
