ETOWAH COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Joyce Garrard has been sentenced to life in prison for the running death of her grandchild.
Garrard is the grandmother accused of killing her 9-year-old granddaughter, Savannah Hardin, in 2012 after making her run for three hours as punishment for lying about eating a candy bar. The little girl collapsed, had a seizure and died a few days later.
She was found guilty of capital murder in March 2015. She was charged with capital murder because Savannah was under 14-years-old.
Savannah's stepmother, Jessica Mae Hardin, is charged with felony murder and is currently out on a $150,000 bond. Prosecutors say she failed to intervene or help Savannah.
Savannah's mother, Heather Walker, testified at Garrard's sentencing phase and said Garrard's life should not be spared.
