HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Red Cross offers all kinds of first aid classes for people who want to be prepared.

Teacher Cindy Adams says there is a lot you can learn which can come in handy later.

"You always need to make sure you have a first aid kit handy," Adams said. "During the summer, environmental emergencies occur: heat related emergencies, cuts... Take a class and see what you can learn to help someone out."

These classes are especially beneficial for parents, grandparents and babysitters, according to Adams.

"Learn when a cut might need stitches, what to do about abrasions, deeper cuts, lacerations," she said. "If someone is having a heat related emergency, they could teach you how to respond to that correctly."

She says that response is crucial if CPR is needed.

"You're learning how to keep oxygen-rich blood flowing through the body by giving compressions and making sure the body is staying alive or the organs are staying alive. Make sure you know when to call 911," Adams added.

Adams says even if you had a class years ago, you might need an update. As training methods and accepted procedures change, so do the classes - and so must your life-saving knowledge.

Giving CPR to a child is easier than you think. The more prepared you are and more attention you give your little charges - the better protected they are.
