Randolph Raider girls move into championship game

    Randolph of Huntsville bounced back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to nip previously unbeaten Guntersville 2-1 at Huntsville's John Hunt Soccer Complex Thursday in the semifinals of the AHSAA Class 4A-5A girls' soccer championships.
     Randolph will meet St. Paul's Episcopal in the championship match Friday at 8:30 p.m.  Day 2 of the AHSAA State Soccer Championships get underway Friday morning with Class 6A girls' semifinals at 9 a.m., with Daphne (10-7-0) taking on  Northridge (15-5-1) and Athens (13-1-7) facing John Carroll Catholic (14-4-2).
    Class 6A boys' semifinals follow at 11:15, Class 7A girls' semifinals at 1:30 p.m., and 7A boys' semifinals at 3:45 p.m.
    Anna Mikel Jones gave Guntersville (13-1-0) a quick 1-0 lead just 7:58 into the match and used a solid defense to keep Coach Ken Hudson's Raiders (12-6-2) from mounting any offense for the first 60 minutes.
    Randolph senior captain Abby Harper finally cracked the Wildcats defense to tie the match at 1-1 with just under 13 minutes remaining in the second half. Freshman forward Sydney Svehlak put Randolph ahead for good 3½ minutes later with the final goal at 70:56.
     Grace Mann had two saves as Guntersville's keeper, and Daria Zarzeka, another senior captain for the Raiders, had seven saves as Randolph's goalkeeper. Guntersville had 13 shot attempts with eight on goal. Randolph made the most of its four shots on goal making two.
