ATHENS, AL (WAFF) - There was a confirmed meth lab explosion at the Budget Inn on Highway 31 in Athens on Wednesday morning, according to Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson.
Amanda Dale Holt was arrested, according to Athens police. She is charged with first-degree manufacture of a controlled substance and third-degree arson.
The Budget Inn manager said the alarm was triggered in room 123 for smoke around 4:45 a.m.
The manager said he ran into the room and saw smoke. He saw two people in the room, and the woman, Amanda Holt, told him it was just a grease fire. She told officers the man in the room with her threw the grease into the tub and it caught the shower curtain on fire.
The manager said the two looked frightened and he got them to come out of the room. He then called police and they discovered drugs. The manager said he is letting police handle the investigation.
Officers were able to see where the walls were black and the plastic from an overhead vent had melted due to heat. Holt told them she had been cooking breakfast when they asked. They could not find any evidence of cooking utensils.
Officers realized it wasn't a grease fire and started to investigate closer. They found a trash can in the room that was smoking and took it outside and noticed paper in the can was smoldering. They also found a plastic bottle that was smoking from the top. They started thinking they were dealing with a possible meth lab.
They then found a bag outside the room containing a baggie of a white substance, coffee filters, lithium batteries, drain cleaner, a pill grinder, several plastic baggies, and pseudoephedrine pill packs.
Holt was booked at the police department and transferred to the county jail. Police are looking for another person who was also involved in the incident.
The Budget Inn was not completely evacuated, and other residents remain in the hotel.
No one was injured in the explosion, according to police.
