Downtown Athens presents new 'Art Incubator'

ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

The city of Athens is doing everything it can to promote its downtown area. Their newest venture is an art incubator.

Oscar Wilde once said art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.

A life-long doodler, Lynn Weatherford says she's known since she was four or five years old that she loved art.

"I love crayons and whenever I got crayons I always smelled them," Weatherford said. "My kids make fun of me, but it just brings back all those memories and the challenges I knew I could do when I was young."

Weatherford is one of several artists at the new art incubator on Washington Street in Athens and now she is part of something new, showcasing talent in the Athens area.

"The art incubator allows artists to have affordable working space and a shared, creative environment and for "Spirit of Athens" our focus is on downtown revitalization so it was a way for us to house the artist as well as take an empty building and give it use." Spirit of Athens Executive Direction, Trisha Black said.

"The opportunity for all these artists in here to show their art number one in Athens is amazing..." Weatherford said. "And the person on the street, I mean, when you buy original art, that's a one of a kind present."

She says something will eventually strike your fancy.

"If it's not in this booth, it's going to be in another booth, it's going to be in another booth," Weatherford said. "Working with these artists up here, just as an artist, is a great opportunity."

Alabamians are just a passionate about art as they are about football. And if you live in a "house divided," you can always look for something that can appease everyone.

"Lowe Mill has been an example for us. We met with the director over there and they've given us a lot of advice," Black said.

Right now, their public hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m., but there will also be receptions and fundraisers at various times.
